We routinely treat Avian Species and Exotic Pets

We are one of the few vet clinics in Singapore that sees birds and exotic animals. Our vets are trained to be on the front-line to assess any common pet bird illnesses and are fully equipped to treat avian species, e.g. x-rays to check for any broken bones, egg-binding etc. We are also one of few animal hospitals in Singapore that do CT-scans in house, an essential diagnostic tool which helps our vets detect certain illnesses such as cancer.

Although we have fixed consultation hours for appointments or walk-ins, our hospital is well-equipped and able to provide round-the-clock dedicated care for critically ill or injured birds.

How is Gaia Vets different from other vets in Singapore?

We recognise that pet owners play an important role in keeping pets healthy and believe that high-quality pet care is made possible only with combined efforts from pet owners and vets.

That is why our vets are trained to diagnose, assess and treat every bird as individual cases based on their unique medical history and home environment. Our vets have experience keeping birds too and often take the time during consultation to provide lots of advice to bird owners and offer solutions relevant to their context wherever possible.

How do I know if my bird is sick?

Exotic animals make wonderful pets but they may not be as expressive or tend to show their discomfort. This is especially true for birds. Avian species show very subtle signs of illness which means bird owners need to be even more vigilant and have ready access to veterinary help.

If your bird is showing one or more of these symptoms below, it’s time bring it to Gaia Vets for a detailed check-up.

Below are some common signs of illnesses:

  1. If your bird stops eating, is eating less or seems to have reduced appetite

  2. If your bird has lost weight Most of us don’t weigh our pet birds regularly so you can try using this handy chart to check if your bird is of a healthy size.

  3. If you notice a change in colour pet bird’s poop or if the droppings look too runny or harder than usual

  4. If you notice messy feathers around your bird's face or feathers that are stuck together at the rump area (the part of your bird’s body immediately above her tail)

  5. If your pet bird’s feathers stay fluffed or ruffled for 24 hours or longer

  6. If your usually active bird suddenly seems listless or moping in the corner of the cage for a long time.

  7. If you notice discharge or redness at your bird’s cere (the area on the beak where nostrils are located) or in its eyes.

  8. If your bird seems to be opening its mouth wide to breathe

  9. If your pet bird stops its usual singing or vocalising

  10. If your bird is bobbing its tail up and down repeatedly

*Important Note: Birds can be highly sensitive to environmental changes, do rule out issues that impact sleep first, e.g. changes in environment or sudden increase in noise level (very common in densely-populated country like Singapore), as these issues can be easily corrected. When in doubt, simply give us a call at 6950 4533.
