Our vets are Small Animal Vets!

At Gaia Vets, we practise scientific and established medical treatments for small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs. Our vets are trained to be on the front-line to assess any common illnesses and are fully equipped to treat small animal pets.

Although we have fixed consultation hours for appointments or walk-ins, our hospital is well-equipped and able to provide round-the-clock dedicated care for critically ill or injured small animal pets.

Is your rabbit or guinea pig sick?

Clever, cute and excellent companions, rabbits and guinea pigs really do make awesome pets. Unlike dogs and cats, these furry pets are so small that when illnesses or injuries occur, things can become serious very quickly. Stress due to changes in the environment (e.g. new cage, new home) can also cause illnesses in small animals.

We’ve compiled a list of common symptoms which you should look out for. If your pet is showing one or more of these symptoms below, it’s time bring it to Gaia Vets for a detailed check-up.

Below are some common signs of illnesses or stress:

  1. If your rabbit/guinea pig is drinking or eating less; or seems to have reduced appetite

  2. If you notice unusual or no bowel movements, e.g. diarrhoea, small and dry pellets. For rabbits/guinea pigs, they typically eat and pass food out within 4 - 6 hours so a lack of poo is definitely of concern. We’ve created a handy poop chart for guinea pigs which you can check out as well.

  3. If your usually active pet suddenly seems listless or huddling in the corner of the cage for a long time. Rabbits feeling pain in their intestines tend to remain in a hunched position.

  4. If your rabbit/guinea pig coat looks puffed up or you notice that they are not grooming themselves like usual

  5. If your rabbit is grinding its teeth. This usually happens as a response to pain.

  6. If you notice any unusual growths or bumps on your pet’s body

“With small mammals, time is always critical. If you notice that your rabbit has not eaten or taken a poo in 12 hours, it is best to bring her to see a vet. We see many owners coming to us only after 2 - 3 days of their rabbits exhibiting such symptoms, and unfortunately many of them don’t survive.” - Dr Arman Chen

How is Gaia Vets different from other vets in Singapore?

We value the relationship between pet, pet owners and vets, and take this factor into account. Our approach to small animal care is always to first

  • Assess the pet’s condition and medical history

  • Listen and understand pet owner’s concerns

  • Take the home environment into consideration

  • Evaluate and come up with the most appropriate treatment plans

  • Partner with pet owner to nurse the pet back to health or manage long term illnesses

Does Gaia Vets provide regular health-checks for pocket pets?

Yes we do! Prevention is better than cure and we highly encourage small animal pet owners to bring their pets in for annual health check-ups.

With some years of experience treating and keeping rabbits and guinea pigs as pets, our vets can provide plenty of advice suited to pet owners in Singapore, especially for first-time owners of small pets.
