Our vets are Small Animal Vets!

We are one of the few vet clinics in Singapore that routinely sees small pets such as hamsters, gerbils and rodents. Our vets are trained to be on the front-line to assess any common illnesses and are fully equipped to treat your pocket pets.

Although we have fixed consultation hours for appointments or walk-ins, our hospital is well-equipped and able to provide round-the-clock dedicated care for critically ill or injured small animal pets.

Is your hamster or gerbil sick?

Hamsters and gerbils are some of the most common household pets in Singapore especially because of their small physical size and the fact they can be contained.

Unlike dogs and cats, hamsters and rodents are so small that when illnesses or injuries occur, things can become serious very quickly. Stress due to changes in the environment (e.g. new cage, new home) can also cause illnesses in small animals.

We’ve compiled a list of common symptoms which you should look out for. If your pet is showing one or more of these symptoms below, it’s time bring it to Gaia Vets for a detailed check-up.

Below are some common signs of illnesses or stress:

  1. If your hamster/gerbil is eating less or seems to have reduced appetite

  2. If your usually active pet suddenly seems listless or huddling in the corner of the cage for a long time.

  3. If your hamster/gerbil’s coat looks ruffled or unkempt or you notice patches of fur loss

  4. If you notice sneezing, wheezing, and/or discharge from the nose or eyes

  5. If you notice wetness around the tail i.e. diarrhoea

  6. If you notice unusual bumps or growths on your hamster/gerbil’s body

If your hamster/gerbil is ill or injured, keep them warm and encourage them to take some food or water (using a dropper) until you can see a vet for consultation.

How is Gaia Vets different from other vets in Singapore?

We value the relationship between pet, pet owners and vets, and take this factor into account. Our approach to small animal care is always to first

  • Assess the pet’s condition and medical history

  • Listen and understand pet owner’s concerns

  • Take the home environment into consideration

  • Evaluate and come up with the most appropriate treatment plans

  • Partner with pet owner to nurse the pet back to health or manage long term illnesses

Does Gaia Vets provide regular health-checks for pocket pets?

Yes we do! Prevention is better than cure and we highly encourage small animal pet owners to bring their pets in for annual health check-ups.

With some years of experience treating and keeping small animals as pets, our vets can provide plenty of advice suited to pet owners in Singapore, especially for first-time owners of small pets.

Unfortunately, not for pocket pets. Due to their small size, our vets must see them in person for a detailed check.
